To say that everyone there is showing off is to mince words. It's not show-off as in Instagram selfies, or travel and food pics - consumer culture is forgivable. I also don't have an issue with the simulated optimism and excitement - we've all learned to ignore the motivational messages from that one guy in our lives (OK, maybe five guys).

Imagine you're in the US. The drainage in your garden needs fixing, and the contractor sends a couple of black dudes to take care of it. While working, they're thirsty and ask for some water. Last week, Kavin discovered a music keyboard tucked away under his bed. This entire weekend, the dark side marched through our 🧠s as he practised the Imperial March from dusk to dawn.
Having mastered the March to his satisfaction, he decided he's going to learn the keyboard. But he refused to learn musical notation 🎶.
Why? Because that's how they taught music at school! "I don't want to know the inner workings of the ear, or musical notation. I want to play." ( Imanuel Imti please note 😅)
Before I could reach out to BDeol, Bharat Krishna Barry or any of the other usual suspects, I found him halfway through a music book, playing from notation.
How? Turns out, two books were discovered along with the keyboard. One was the manual in English, other was this book in 🎶. How could he let the book go to waste? So he learnt to read 🎶.

The GoI is throwing ₹1 crore at developing a videoconferencing app. But Open Source SIP solutions have existed for at least the last 20 years. So I thought I would so a quick check of the current FLOSS videoconferencing landscape, and found Jitsi. Jitsi is WebRTC compliant, which means that like Google Meet, it runs entirely within your browser (on a PC). For mobile devices you need an app.
So I quickly set up https://meet.thinvent.in/, and invite you, and all your friends, colleagues, viewers and customers, to please use it and test it. This is an entirely free (both free as in freedom and free as in beer), secure, and low bandwidth alternative to Zoom, Google Meet, Duo, Facetime, and every other tracking infested videoconferencing solution out there.
All traffic is encrypted with a LetsEncrypt SSL key. The servers are hosted in Mumbai and do not, by design, store any of your audio or video. Calls between two apps should be entirely peer to peer, with the traffic not even passing through the server (yet to test this, please use and help me test).
I'll be adding some blogs to this website to explain how this solution is secure and scalable. I will also include instructions on how you can set up your own server in next to no time.

The police are going above and beyond the call of duty right now. While I'm not supportive of the police hitting people to enforce lockdown, they are out there maintaining law and order and coordinating relief work. Just being out there instead of at home is a big deal.
The way this girl is behaving with these cops - we as parents really need to teach our children to respect public servants. If a cop is wrong, as they frequently are, the best course of action is to follow their instructions and take legal action later. To disobey a public servant and then assault them, especially during a public emergency, is simply unacceptable.

I am not sure of the legal Framework that permits an Indian to take vast wealth and move abroad with it, but I know that people have done it and it is possible, and those who have not done it are often eager to do it.
The wealthy Indians who have settled abroad get tax benefits that Indians do not have. They also get treated very nicely, as foreign investors, when they then invest their wealth back in Indian projects.
We could block the movement of capital from India to foreign shores. But that would also make it hard for a Tata or Oyo or Infosys to invest abroad in other companies, or in the expansion of their own company.
Wealthy people and their eager minions in Consulting firms have devised various instruments to make the identification of flight of wealth made in India to foreign shores very hard.
Numerous methods of obfuscation exist, and it will take very strong political will to enact laws and processes. And then these policies will provide too much power to bureaucrats. It will be a return to the era of licence Raj, which will prevent the creation of multinational Indian corporations. And we do need Indian MNCs in banking, mining, agri, pharma and services. In fact we already have them and they're awesome.
So yeah, a wealth tax is great. But it's penny wise, pound foolish. First figure out how to keep Indian wealth in India. That Indian wealth is currently the personal wealth of these super rich, and they can just up and go with it. Like too many others before them.

This red vented bulbul was getting very perturbed by my presence. Then I realised it was building its nest, at my arm's height, in these bushes. I respectfully moved away.
