Last week, Kavin discovered a music keyboard tucked away under his bed. This entire weekend, the dark side marched through our 🧠s as he practised the Imperial March from dusk to dawn.
Having mastered the March to his satisfaction, he decided he's going to learn the keyboard. But he refused to learn musical notation 🎶.
Why? Because that's how they taught music at school! "I don't want to know the inner workings of the ear, or musical notation. I want to play." ( Imanuel Imti please note 😅)
Before I could reach out to BDeol, Bharat Krishna Barry or any of the other usual suspects, I found him halfway through a music book, playing from notation.
How? Turns out, two books were discovered along with the keyboard. One was the manual in English, other was this book in 🎶. How could he let the book go to waste? So he learnt to read 🎶.
(Meanwhile, it's 2020 and Sugata Mitra is shocked that we still have schools.)
So, there's two kinds of music he plays. One is the Old McDonald's kind of stuff from the beginner's book he has. Those, he won't memorise, because "you are not supposed to memorise notation". The other is fun stuff, like the Super Mario background score, the Mission Impossible theme, etc. Those he learns from YouTube, and commits to memory.
