• I am manning the company sales phone, WhatsApp, email and web lines for a couple of weeks now.
  
  (I wrote the whole CRM module to be well intergrated with our backend code as well as use AI agents for stuff like call recording summarisation, WhatsApp conversation summarisation, etc. So I am using my own product to make sure it works as expected.)
  
  From hilarious to infuriating, I am having all kinds of conversations and experiences. Just now an IndiaMart salesperson called us and kept insisting we should be on their platform. I had to finally shut him down with "Gentleman, your website is not a product, it is an infestation. I never want any of our potential customers to have the kind of horrible experiences you create on the web. I despise calling those vendors whose only online presence is on your or TradeIndia's portals. Because before I get to them, you will get know who I am and what I want, and then you will hound me with irrelevant enquiries for months.
  
  Seriously, how did these people look at Alibaba 🤮 and say, "fantastic, we can make an experience 10x worse than even this!

• By the nature of our business at Thinvent Technologies, we deal with a lot of startups. I have explained the business of electronics manufacturing to many a budding entrepreneur over the last 18 years. They have common fantasies, such as "I don't need 4 USB ports, if we reduce 2 USB ports how much will we save?" You want 1,000 units of something that is manufactured in the millions, and you want a change (even it if is a reduction). It will cost you more money to do this. People project their experience getting custom furniture made (say), to mass manufacturing. Which is fine. We are here to educate them.
  
  And then there is a certain class of 20-something entrepreneur. Either they come from a line of lala businesses. Or they may have worked in a corporate, handling large budgets. They say silly things like "I need 1 lakh units of X product, but I need you to make a discount on the sample." Because they may buy 1 lakh units in future, they need a discount now on the sample (which arguably costs much more to make because it is a one-off).
  
  Basically, you have no money. So why not be upfront and honest about it? "I have very little money right now, I have no funding, and I am trying out an idea." Then let us together figure something out. But humility and honesty is not something that comes easily to this class of entrepreneurs.
  
  I think the other part of the equation is also problematic. The vendors who salivate at the "1 lakh" quantity and go running in with free samples. I have seen Oyo exploit a cousin this way; at one point I had to ask him to cut his losses.
  
  So a common question I now ask people who make statements like this is "What is your business model? Where do you get the money for this purchase?" Even when dealing with the largest of corporates, we now have a form they must fill up, that bluntly asks "Is this project funded?" Very often that puts them off. Which is fine. As a startup / small business ourselves, we must pick our battles. Should we spend resources doing R&D on the ideas of a corporate employee. Or should we spend those same resources building on our own ideas. There is no clear answer. For example we invested a lot of energy working on a new idea with Cipla. Things worked out, sorta. We invested a lot of energy developing things for the Railways. Some did, some didn't. We are now no longer the first movers when some of these customers have an idea they need realised.
  
  But humility is what this post is about. Not being haughty in your communication goes a long way in building bridges. If you come from a line of lala businessmen, or have worked in a corporate that treats vendors like, well, vendors, and not partners, then you won't go far. I worked with these two chaps from Gulbarga. They wanted to build a business renting low cost computers to students. Very honourable intentions, very much our line of business. Much to the annoyance of Sapna B, I spent call after call with them, grilling them on their business model.

• Did something fun yesterday. Implemented a "related searches" widget on www.thinvent.in.
  
  When working for Bloomreach, this is the work I did every day. But we used Hadoop (EMR) data pipelines. Using Huggingface Embeddings and Claude I was able to write a pipeline within a few hours. I then wrote another pipeline that just asked Deepseek for recommendations. Comparing random samples from the two outputs, embeddings won, and is rolling out on the website now.
  
  LLM coding agents, prebaked AI libraries/datasets, and 15 years of accumulated knowledge, have made it much easier to implement this kind of feature (Not comparing this naive approach with the enterprise class solution Bloomreach sells, though). I was surprised to see my pipeline converge within a few hours for 100K pages and 90K queries, while running alongside a full fledged webserver on a 4 GB RAM Gravitron instance.

• I am working these days on a Bootstrap-Flask-Jinja based project that I had started a decade ago. Back then I wasn't great at Python programming and mostly wrote C style code in Python. Stuff like this:

  Tech debt has piled up and it is becoming hard to maintain older code as I aggressively write new code. So I used Google's AI tool, Gemini, to refractor some of this code today. Gemini easily rewrote such blocks into Pythonic statements like these:
  
  return all(partid in allowed.get(category, {partid}) for category, partid in data.items())
  
  Gemini also performed a lot better than when I had used it an year ago. Turns out it is a great tool to clean up cruft, and also to teach me some nifty list comprehension tricks. Out of the dozens of methods I rewrote, some well over 200 lines in length, Gemini only made mistakes in two places. It tried to cut down the amount of code I had written in these places, assuming it wasn't necessary, thus changing the outcome of the code. I would say that is a better score than most programmers doing refactoring without asking questions of the original author.

• Sharing another customer service woe, this time with HDFC Life. I purchased a life insurance policy. They emailed me a letter. The letter has a very old office address on it. Said letter also has a link to a portal where I could update the contact details. The portal displayed a different address - which I have never been associated with. It also displayed a different email address and phone number from that on the letter.
  
  I wrote to them, asking where they were pulling this data from. They responded with a form that I must fill up in order to have the address updated. And of course I needed to attach proofs to substantiate this address.
  
  Indignant, I wrote back, specifically asking _them_ to provide copies of documents basis which _they_ had established these two physical addresses as mine. I also asked them for a copy of the form filled by me when applying for the policy, and a copy of the address proof I had provided then.
  
  No dice. They keep replying back asking _me_ to provide _them_ with a proof of my current address, while not even acknowledging my concerns - where are they getting these addresses from, and how many printed letters with my private financial information have they despatched so far to these random addresses.
  
  What is happening in corporate India? Is everybody just constantly reading from a script with no application of the mind? Is there fear and terror in the customer service departments, such that no trace of human intellect must be betrayed and only the bidding of the higher echelons must be done, customer satisfaction be damned.
  
  Rhetorical rant: What is this manic obsession with data collection by companies? When the government does it, we well understand what their motives are. After all they've foisted the half baked CKYC system upon us. I have traced one of the bad addresses to that database, from where it is sending it to all other financial institutions. Of course I never provided that address, nor could I every have produced any "proof" for that address. How, then, did one of the financial institutions upload this junk address into the system? Why would HDFC override the address I explicitly gave with garbage from this system? And do citizens have any forum to knock to fix all this swapping of garbage?

• I am facing a peculiar customer service issue with Tata Motors. I wonder what you guys do in such situations.
  
  I own a Tata Nexon EV. The vehicle works rather well. It has a nifty design feature - a socket for an umbrella built right into the driver's door. The socket is small, and not every umbrella fits into it. Tata Motors has umbrellas designed to fit this socket (sold separately from the car). The dealerships in Goa never seem to carry it, so I decided to buy it online from here: https://lnkd.in/dTi9pCun
  
  The website requires me to submit my car registration number and chassis number in order to buy an umbrella. Annoyed by this cast-your-net-wide manner of data collection, I nevertheless obliged because I really need this umbrella (biblical rains in Goa this year). But of course the website doesn't work, and freezes when one tries to submit the vehicle number.
  
  So I wrote to customer service, requesting assistance in procuring said parasol. And on cue they reply back asking for the chassis number, registration number and odometer reading in order to "take my case further".
  
  Obstinate as I am, I wrote back, asking why Tata must establish am umblical connection between my vehicle chassis and the umbrella before selling it to me.
  
  Here is where it gets weird. I am getting calls. I am getting email replies. In each of them, robotically, they keep asking for the chassis number. When I ask them why the chassis number is required, there isn't even silence. They simply ignore me and repeat back the same question - please give us your chassis number in order to proceed further.
  
  I don't know what to say. Indian corporates have reduced their minions to a situation worse than robots, where they have no intellect or soul left. They just do the master's bidding, with no shame or self respect. I really do see a future for genAI now, if this is the kind of mind numbness it intends to replace.
  
  But I digress. What would you do in such a dystopian situation, where the stakes are not high at all? It is just an umbrella after all (although I am inclined to buy two now that I've put in so much effort).

To address the digital divide, we are launching a ₹10,000 (plus taxes and shipping) desktop computer (PC, monitor, keyboard, mouse and UPS). Later in 2022, we will launch an all-in-one computer which costs ₹10,000 including taxes and shipping.
  
  The need: We need a team of people to communicate the value proposition of this computer to decision makers. We do not believe in endlessly burning money on ads. We have already impacted the lives of hundreds of children in a positive way, and we want folks to capture and narrate these stories in text and video. • Hello wellwishers. An updated on our (first ever) investment round.
  
  We spent the last three months getting our balance sheet for 2020-21 audited, getting an approved valuer to value the company, and get some paperwork in order. (We were initially told this will all take a month). We learn a lot about our business in the process, and also had some very enlightening conversations. We are now even more bullish about our business than we were in August. We also had a bank come and give us a loan on very good terms, because of which we have halved the amount of money we are raising through equity.
  
  We are now at the stage where we are taking formal confirmations from our investors and then sending over some paperwork. One investor has had to back out due to a potential conflict of interest. • Thinvent Technologies is doing a fundraise, and I made a post about it on Facebook. A lot of folks got interested, so I am copying the post here:
  
  As many of you might know, I founded a company in 2007, with the mission to create computers for the rural market.
  
  India has 35 crore children of school going age, 30 crore of whom have been without (online) education for the last 1.5 years. In 2007, the digital divide was about children finishing school without any computer skills. Hiring managers said - if you can’t type on a computer, you might as well not know how to write. But today, it’s a lot worse. With the rise of EdTech and online education, the unfair advantage to those who have access to YouTube and app/web based education is simply disgraceful.
  
  Thinvent has done a great job (if I may say so myself) of building rugged, reliable, hassle free computers that last much longer than the average desktop or laptop, while facing the heat, dust and erratic power of rural India and Africa. We have large customers like the Railways, banks, logistics companies, startups and chains of educational institutions, who have given us repeat orders for over a decade now.
  
  While much of our revenue comes from the B2B segment, we also rock in the consumer segment. Our online education star, the Micro 5, is a quad core 1.5 GHz computer with 2 GB RAM and WiFi, Ethernet and Bluetooth connectivity. It supports Zoom and Google Meet, and lets students comfortably attend classes, conduct online research and finish assignments. In the hallowed tradition of eating our own dog food, my younger son Kavin attended classes on the predecessor of the Micro 5, the Micro 4, for many months during the lockdown of 2020. The Micro 5 sells for just ₹2,150 and is supported for at least five years (taxes, shipping, keyboard, mouse and monitor extra).
  
  Our products have frequently been bestsellers on Amazon. We support home and small business customers across the vastness of India. However, one thing we haven’t invested in is marketing. We have lived by the adage that once you build a better mousetrap, the world will beat a path to your door. In our case, that has held true mostly for technically aware customers, who can appreciate the long term value of our product.
  
  And that brings me to the point of this post. We are going to be raising money by selling equity in the company, and using that money to reach out to the vast consumer base in India and other emerging economies that _deserves_ to be using our computers. If you know someone looking to invest a few lakh rupees in a company that has been profitable for years, and has a track record of growth and customer satisfaction, please do send them my way. • In order to study CSP (Content Security Policy), I implemented it on https://www.thinvent.in . After a bit of tweaking and tinkering, I was able to make it work. I then kept track of CSP violations. Here are some items that were blocked:

  For a moment I thought thinvent.in had been compromised. Then I noticed that the UA in 100% of these reports was "UC Browser (Android)". So UC Browser, that somehow touts itself as a secure browser, is inserting JS and iFrames into web pages, then using pixels to track what people are viewing. How sinister is that?
  
  The comic thing is that while the browser is up to these shenanigans, it is simultaneously also religiously submitting all CSP reports with its own violations to website owners. Sweet.
  
  I learn something new today. If you have a website of any import, you should implement CSP and HSTS to prevent such man in the middle attacks.
  
  A note on demographics: I see that most visitors with the UC Browser were coming to JTBS pages. This means they are unemployed or self employed, and looking for self employment.
