Honestly, I am happy to see CentOS die. Between EPEL, ELRepo and RPMFusion, I have wasted too much of my time managing RPM package dependency hell. I started using Ubuntu version 6.06 onwards. Five years ago, I migrated from Fedora to Ubuntu as my Linux desktop OS of choice. I then migrated all my cloud servers from CentOS to Ubuntu. Thinux, the desktop OS I maintain for @[100063777711947:2048:Thinvent], has also migrated completely from Fedora/CentOS to Ubuntu.
You can now obtain 16 licenses of RedHat for free, per organisation. Why? Why would I want to manage the license hell that is RedHat. I could tag dozens of RHEL customers here, who all hate RedHat licensing. IBM has only made their licensing more complex. So now that most (new) servers are in the cloud, RH wakes up and wants folks starting out in the cloud to get 16 free licenses. And experience not a free version of Linux, but one that is encumbered by license management, registration, and periodic compliance. Yeah, right.
What RH completes misses is that the game isn't just about the cloud any more. The bigger game is in architectures. And compared to Debian and Ubuntu, Fedora completely missed the bus on that one. Uptake of ARM instances on AWS is rising rapidly. At the desktop end, ARM uptake has been phenomenal. Thinux for ARM had zero shipments in 2015. By 2020, a majority of Thinux shipments were on ARM computers.
We had stopped ARM shipments for a few years preceding 2015. From the beginning, Thinux on ARM was Ubuntu based, while Thinux on x86 was Fedora based. The only reason for continuing with Fedora on x86 was the training ecosystem RedHat has in India. Devs trained in India are familiar with RH. So they look for /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-* instead of /etc/network/interfaces. Sorry, can't serve that market any more, because the cost of keeping them served is simply too high.

Whatever little they lose in performance by migrating Docker host instances from AL to Ubuntu, they gain back in compatibility and developer joy. Ubuntu was the OS of choice in the cloud when AWS started out. And continues to be the OS of choice. 16 free licenses isn't making anyone jump from a libre OS to an IBM OS.

When it gets really cold like it is cold right now in Gurgaon the bathroom goes from being this sanctuary where I hide from my kids to being this frozen hell that I completely avoid to the extent that on the rare occasion that I do enter it I look around vaguely coz I have strange distant memories of being in this place often and I wonder why I was spending so much time in it because my kids aren't even that bad tbh.

I took this photograph today, to demonstrate the 4K capabilities of our ₹3,200 ($44) computer, the Micro 4. The wallpaper of the computer is a picture I took earlier this month in Gurgaon.
The kids think this is very meta. The camera took a pic of the forest. This was displayed on the monitor as a wallpaper. The same camera then took a pic of the monitor. And now the same monitor is being used to display this second pic.
How marvellous is it that this tiny computer, first launched in 2016, continues to get better with time thanks to the contributions of the Linux community. The graphics drivers on it have improved every year, and it can now support all manners of devices that it could not in 2016.

A poor man's CRM system, if you will. Earlier we would get emails and there was no way to track what happened to each lead. Google PageSpeed hates me with a vengeance. The WordPress Divi ContactForm7 ReCaptcha combination is a mess in itself. Add to that, the hundreds of updates and plug-ins added and removed from this ball of PHP MySQL wax since 2011. So I turned off ReCaptcha, partly also to remove Google's horrid tracking.
Lo and behold, Asana instantly had tickets like "need porn" floating around. I start getting calls from colleagues, asking if the website is broken. And I get existential. These are Covid times. Everything is broken. Finances are broken. The order book is broken. Hearts are broken. Salaries might soon be broken. So what if someone got past our spam filters and tried to hustle some porn to us.

लेटे लेटे नज़र इस कील पर गई। निकालना भूल गया था इसे। इस कील से वो intravenous ड्रिप की बोतल लटकती थी, जिससे नर्स मुझे दिन का बीस ग्राम antibiotic चढ़ाती थी। Covid negative होने के तीन हफ़्ते बाद चढ़ा तेज़ बुखार, जो शायद hospitalisation की वजह से होने वाले secondary infection से हुआ था। डॉक्टर कुछ ठीक से बता नहीं पाए, मग़र आठ दिन तक भारी दवा देकर उसे दबा ज़रूर पाए।
कितनी भारी? एक antibiotic की गोली में दो से पांच सो milligram दवा होती है। मतलब एक आम बीमार लेता है दिन की ज़्यादा से ज़्यादा एक ग्राम दवा, वो भी मुँह से। मेरी नसों में चढ़ी इससे बीस गुना ज़्यादा दवा।
जब अपने बालों या नाखूनों का हाल देखता हूँ तो भूल जाता हूँ कि किस झंझट से छूट कर निकला हूँ 😬। शायद इस कील को, वहीं छोड़ देना चाहिए।
लेटे लेटे नज़र इस कील पर गई। निकालना भूल गया था इसे। इस कील से वो intravenous ड्रिप की बोतल लटकती थी, जिससे नर्स मुझे दिन का बीस ग्राम antibiotic चढ़ाती थी। Covid negative होने के तीन हफ़्ते बाद चढ़ा तेज़ बुखार, जो शायद hospitalisation की वजह से होने वाले secondary infection से हुआ था। डॉक्टर कुछ ठीक से बता नहीं पाए, मग़र आठ दिन तक भारी दवा देकर उसे दबा ज़रूर पाए।
कितनी भारी? एक antibiotic की गोली में दो से पांच सो milligram दवा होती है। मतलब एक आम बीमार लेता है दिन की ज़्यादा से ज़्यादा एक ग्राम दवा, वो भी मुँह से। मेरी नसों में चढ़ी इससे बीस गुना ज़्यादा दवा।
जब अपने बालों या नाखूनों का हाल देखता हूँ तो भूल जाता हूँ कि किस झंझट से छूट कर निकला हूँ 😬। शायद इस कील को, वहीं छोड़ देना चाहिए।

Reading through this news piece took me back to the time I was hospitalised with Covid - the day before I was moved to the ICU. I was coughing like all hell. I couldn't stand, couldn't brush, couldn't use the washroom. My oxygen saturation was falling and panic was setting in. The next morning they wheeled me into the ICU and things took a turn for the better.
So, yeah, ICU beds are very important for Covid patients. But you can't keep buying more beds and hiring more medical professionals. The way to improve bed availability is to reduce the number of patients. So please stay inside and stay safe. Stop the spread so some of you can be saved from ending up in the ICU. Being sick with Covid just isn't fun.
