As a school going child I was made aware of the rampant child labour involved in making crackers. And I took the pledge to not burst them.
The industries responded by outsourcing a lot of the work. People would take the work home and use their children, instead of sending their children to factories where they could be spotted by authorities or photographed by nosy journalists.
As a young man I remember going to Vanavani school within IIT campus and speaking to school children there, educating them about the child labour involved in making firecrackers.
CRY used to spearhead the campaign back then. And they were variously labelled as foreign funded and Christian. All the reports from the ground, about the pervasiveness of child workers in firecracker industries, were ignored. People loved crackers.
Gradually, the employment of children in these industries dropped. I'm not sure why or how.
And then the issue of noise and air pollution came up. The health issues that children working in Sivakasi had seen, our own children started exhibiting after Diwali.
This time it was the Hindutva supporters who got their knickers in a knot. Firecrackers had become a part of Hindu religion or culture. But they have only been in wide use for 4-5 centuries. The all important vedas don't mention them, obviously, because the Chinese hadn't invented gunpowder when the vedas were written. These days it has become customary to seek answers about Hindu religion in the vedas instead of just accepting tradition. So a number of seers and religious leaders have given the thumbs down to firecrackers on diwali.
The bursting of firecrackers has gone from being a communal activity to an individual competition of one-upmanship. I remember traveling miles in Bhopal to see ravana being burnt or firecrackers being burst. Now every gully has a celebration. The curse of prosperity. The kinds of harmful chemicals being used to generate various colours and effects have made the courts of the country jump. These aren't your grandpa's anars any more, made at home in a tiny earthen pot with just gunpowder.
And so the battle rages on, year after year. From Diwali to Gurupurab, from weddings to funerals†, and even after cricket victories, our addiction to firecrackers knows no end. Just like our addiction to private vehicles keeps growing year after year.

I don't know if you can see it in the pictures. Or if you even care to see it, to be honest. There is a little pink arc on my fingernails, which marks the time I had Covid. My nail thickness has changed after I recovered, and you can observe that in the side profile pic.
(Should I have clipped my nails and washed my hands before taking the pics? Perhaps. But I'm not shooting for a career in hand modeling.)
When I started growing my hair out in college, some wisecrack came up to me and said that the next logical thing for me to do was to go bald. I wondered aloud what was logical about a bald me. He said that I was obviously growing my hair for the shock value, not because I liked them long. And what is more shocking than a bald head?
It's been twenty years and I've held on to my long hair. Except when I contracted typhoid and suffered hair loss, which made me sport a haircut for a few years. Now, once again, I'm losing hair by the clumps. As in 300-400 hair a day, not just regular hair fall. Scientists have helpfully named the condition telogen effluvium. It is a temporary condition caused by stress.
So earlier this month I sat down with my kids and had a conversation with them. Mentally prepared them for a me with very thin (or no) hair. There was a lot of hand wringing. They photographed the clumps of hair on my pillow every morning, and tried to assess when I'd be completely bald. I am not including pics of my fallen hair, so you can enjoy your evening tea.

The Anvay Naik saga is the story of every small business in India.
Anvay Naik of Concorde Designs Pvt Ltd was owed ₹83L by Arnab Goswami of Republic, ₹4Cr Feroz Shaikh of IcastX/Skimedia and ₹55L Niteish Sarda of Smartworks.
He could not recover this amount and hence he and his mother committed suicide.
If I counted the number of times people have gotten away with not paying Thinvent, I'd easily run out of fingers and toes. We have had POs cancelled after the material is ready. We have had people steal our intellectual property and claim it to be theirs. A large company, or a politically well connected one, can easily eat a small one. Unscrupulous employees at large companies eagerly serve their masters by committing crime after crime.
All this means that a business has to be very cautious about manufacturing goods without an advance, or delivering them without full payment. The services industry has it even harder because things are done bespoke. Clients often start negotiating after the entire work is done, the attitude being of giving bakshish not fair dues.
All of this is solvable with a functional legal system. Which we don't have. So much for ease of doing business. This has a chilling effect on business in general. In any case we are a low trust economy where vendors and customers don't trust each other. On top of it when vendors are wary of extending credit, and the legal system doesn't work for buyer or seller, it leads to fewer transactions than are possible (or in operations research speak, a high set up cost for each transaction).
Naik did not receive justice or his payments while was alive. His family did not get justice after he committed suicide. The police conducted a shoddy investigation and closed the file. As luck would have it, one of the perpetrators has political enemies. So now justice will be done. A criminal justice system that works on luck. 🤦🏽♂️

I often rant about the fact that a lot of the wealth that you see in colonial countries, and in the stock markets of these countries, is from colonial loot and plunder.
Robert Clive looted from India the present day equivalent of £54 million in the 18th century (thus becoming the then richest person in Europe). Apart from this, just this one individual took more Mughal artefacts than are in the possession of the Government of India's museums. These artefacts are housed not in any museum, but in a private residence called the Powis castle in the UK.
But where is the £54 million? Wikipedia is an interesting resource. Clive had nine children. I traced the eldest male descendents of the Clive family. Over eight generations, the eldest of the Clives have thrived. All of them were MPs, either by election or by virtue of them being Earls (whatever that means). Just one portion of the current Clive's wealth is worth £84 million. Imagine the collective wealth of all of Robert Clive's present day descendants, and then compare it to the poverty of his victims' descendants.
Capitalism requires the concentration of risk-friendly wealth in order to fund the rise of a Rockefeller or a Musk. A lot of that concentration, in the hands of people who never worked hard to earn it, has happened through rather bloody means.

A patent gives its owner the legal right to exclude others from exploiting an invention for a limited period of years, in exchange for publishing an enabling public disclosure of the invention. It is a contract between an inventor and society. The inventor tells society all about the invention. In exchange, society agrees to exclusive use of the patent by the inventor for a few years.
Inheritance tax does something similar for businesses created by individuals. After the founder has enjoyed the benefits of controlling a listed company in their lifetime, inheritance tax (as implemented in South Korea) ensures that a majority of the founder's shareholding enters the stock market. The wealth generated from the sale of this stock rests with the government.
If you only inherit less than half the shares owned by your parent, you can't end up with disasters like Anil Ambani (a child would rarely inherit a controlling stake). Even worse is the situation created by Mukesh Ambani, who is abusing the wealth he inherited into creating one monopoly after another.
Gift taxes are tightly coupled with inherited tax. Orange Trump wouldn't have received a seed capital of millions of dollars as gift from his dad, if his dad had to give an equal amount to the government.
Korea's Inheritance and tax rates slide up from 10% to 50%, depending on the value of the Inheritance/gift. Taxes done right, indeed. $11 billion of Samsung shares entered the market. And the South Korean government got richer by that much money. Win win.

The Tesla truck is the most interesting product announcement I have seen in many years.
The specs far outcompete any existing pickup truck. There is onboard 110V and 220V AC output. Onboard compressor. The tailgate lets you roll your gear on. It is much cheaper than a comparable F150; only 10% more expensive than the cheapest F150, and then the tax credits and savings (see next para) kick in. It can carry 1.5 tonnes, tow a lot more. The F150 maxes out at 1.05T, don't even ask me how much it costs and how much fuel it guzzles at that capacity.
EVs are currently doing 300,000 miles when ICE vehicles die out at 150,000 miles. Understand what this means - humanity will need half the vehicles it currently produces in order to meet its transportation needs, once we migrate from ICE to EV. Moreover, the key component in an EV - the battery - just lives on as a solar/inverter battery even after its vehicle is dead.
Maintenance savings over 300,000 miles are adding up to $4,000. Fuel savings, $20,000 at current prices. Body is dent and rust proof, windows are nick and scratch proof.
Idiots are tittering over a half smashed window, when they've never built or demoed a product before and don't realise how ridiculously heavy and hard a steel ball is. The auto industry just had the ground cut from under their feet. If every auto major isn't wholesale throwing away their entire ICE roadmap, they're just driving fast into their sunset.

This is a world where people who have never driven a truck, never hauled even half a ton of gear, camped in the wilderness, lived off the grid for more than a day, or used just their hands and their brains to fix something, have opinions about how a truck looks. If my kids can't make it through the competitive college admissions, we will blame reservation/affirmative action, then buy them a seat in a private university.
When they eventually become successful in life (which I am confident they will), society will credit their #hardwork, #intelligence and #genes for their success. No one will talk of their #privilege. No one ever taught me about my privilege (Okay, maybe they did, but I wasn't listening).
In college I noticed how much harder it was for students who came from a poor background. Banks wouldn't give them educational loans, even though they were IIT students with a bright future, simply because their parents were incapable of guaranteeing their loans (IIT was willing to guarantee the loans but the banks didn't care).
Meanwhile, college costs will continue to rise faster than wages, putting even publicly funded universities out of the reach of students who need that education the most.
