We've recently started experimenting with hexagonal patterns for vents in our computer chassis (pics in comments). I looked at this tree and I thought I was hallucinating from too much work.

Hexagons are hard to draw, but they absolutely provide the greatest open space to stem ratio. This tree's leaves can receive the maximum amount of sunlight while dedicating the least space to stems. Evolution figured that out.
