This was obvious to most engineers, but the statistics are out now. Driverless cars are much, much safer than human drivers. The point of autonomous cars was never as much about drudgery reduction as it was about reducing death and destruction.
A vehicle has significantly more destructive ability than a gun, yet we regularly hand them out to emotional, excitable folks, even 16 year old kids, as a "necessity". Excited that we will see the near elimination of road-accident related death and injuries in my lifetime.
(Road accidents are the leading cause of mortality in India in the 1 to 35 age group, per actuarial tables. Even in 35-40 they are neck-to-neck with cardiovascular.)
