A three storey building collapsed in the middle of the night, close to my kids' school in Gurgaon. More than 30 adults and 20 children were allegedly buried under the rubble as they slept inside their quarters. JCBs are being used to clear the rubble. The building was inside an urban village - what is called lal dora - where municipal rules of construction do not apply.

A tragedy in a far corner of the world is reported live to us through Twitter. A tragedy next door escapes attention for hours because no one around is literate or tech savvy enough to post it on twitter. Had it been on social media, pressure would have built up on the administration to take urgent action. Gurgaon's Twitterverse is still flooded with posts about overflowing drains and sewage blocking roads after the rains.
