Why can't we decide once and for all what we want? We have built an economy that hugely depends on the sale of demerit goods like cars, fossil fuels, cigarettes, sugary drinks, plastic packaging and what not. If this economy flounders ever so slightest, we all panic. Yet we want a change in consumption patterns.
When the anthropocene ends with the mass extinction of most life forms, when human civilisation as we know it collapses, will we then build a new sustainable economy from the ashes of the old one?
