Many of us were unfortunate enough to grow up knowing her as merely a bandit, a dacoit. All those years of reading the Hindustan Times took its toll.

And then all of a sudden she was an MP and you were like, "Wait, what, now dacoits can capture booths and win elections?"

And then there was the Bandit Queen movie, which you couldn't watch because it had adult themes and strong language and you were still a child.

Misinformation.

I currently have two copies of 1984 on my bed. Nilay is trying to force feed the book to me. He says it is the book that people most commonly claim that they have read when they actually haven't. I'm guilty as charged. He has read it and he insists I do too.

Whether I read the book or not, at least my children know what misinformation is, and will hopefully not make opinions about the great leaders of our times based on how mass media chooses to portray them.
