I started programming with BASIC in '86 or '87, simultaneously on a Sinclair ZX Spectrum and an IBM PC clone. I quickly moved on to Xbase and vector graphics and system administration, and was stuck there till '95 when CBSE forced me to learn Pascal. Java happened in '97, C in '98, and I've never looked back.

• Saurabh JVikram I actually don't like programming too much. My first and only love is systems programming... and today FOSS solves most of that without writing any code. I do love scripting... that is always fun. Programming is a lot like poetry. You do a bit of it once in a while to keep you happy. You don't need to do it any more to make a living. Once in a while you come across some constructions that make you marvel at the language. That's it.

• Saurabh JCome come now. You authored Hive, I don't have to explain how open source development works to you. I write a lot less, reuse a lot more. The little I must write is of higher value. For example I maintain (by proxy) some touchscreen drivers in the kernel. I don't have to write the entire driver in userspace. I just submit patches on kernel space drivers as I come across new touchscreen hardware. Even a few lines of change allows new hardware to work. Sometimes as little as one line introducing a new usb Id.
• Saurabh JThe point is that I no longer consider a number of these patches as code. There is no algorithm. Its like configuration in code. A lot of drivers are actually that. I mostly script and I don't consider them code either. Maybe my definition of code is outmoded.

There are some of us lower class folks out here (scientific researchers) who have to deal in "stuff" that needs to cross-compile -- with Fortran 77, C and CUDA. While one was figuring out why some crazy dude in 70s (perhaps on drugs) was flipping variables or pointers (to save memory), the PhD advisor thinks you were playing games. My first (and best) experience in C was reading somebody's code that had a main.c -- but none of the modules/sub-routines in this file were used in the binary Hide
