What has been happening in India and China for almost half a century, has arrived in Western countries. In developing countries there is a real competition for resources and opportunity. Being "meritorious" and going to "elite schools" is truly a ticket out. Or was, till recently; now the economies have opened up and there are myriad opportunities for young people beyond mere economic excellence.

But what in the world is driving western folk into this grind? What opportunity is missing in their lives for them to destroy the childhood of wards? Is it the competitive spirit gone awry?
