What is the most hurtful thing I've read today? That the met office's announcement of a delay in the monsoons will make the stock market jittery.

Millions across India will go thirsty longer. Not without a bath. Literally thirsty. And of course, hungry. Those that are farmers will be pushed closer to destitution and suicide. Crops covering areas much larger than all our big cities put together will be destroyed.

But we don't care about the human cost of this catastrophe. We care about the economic impact. We care about our portfolios. I say, screw the stock market. And to hell with the economy. Maybe then we would realise that water is a basic human need, not just an economic need. Maybe then our headlines will express the true impact of drought.
